Abstract Only! ‘help day’ today

Hawaii Island Art Alliance has scheduled a “help day” for artists who need assistance with their entries for the Wailoa Center’s upcoming Abstract Only! exhibit.

The help day is from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. today at the Wailoa Center, 200 Piopio St. in Hilo. Call 933-0416 to reserve a time slot.

The online submission deadline for Abstract Only! is 9 p.m. Sunday. The website is abstractonly.artcall.org.

The all-media juried exhibit, open to all artists, is Aug. 4-30 at the Wailoa Center, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The art take-in is July 29. This year’s juror is Hiroki Morinoue, director, print master with Donkey Mill Art Center.

The State Foundation on Culture and Arts Acquisition Award Selection Committee will be reviewing Abstract Only! pieces for possible Acquisition Awards.

Church hosting rummage sale

Puna Covenant Church on Old Volcano Highway in Keaau invites everyone to its annual Community Bazaar from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday.

The rummage sale is one of the church’s most popular events, said bazaar chairwoman Mililani Hughes. There will be clothing, small household appliances, kitchenware and lots more at low prices, she said.

The roomful of rummage will be accompanied by a bake sale, plant sale, and food concessions, featuring specialty Filipino food and other goodies freshly made in the church kitchen.

There will be toys for sale for keiki, and a book sale with hard backs, paperbacks and videos.

ArtRageous sale at HPA

The Isaacs Art Center at Hawaii Preparatory Academy is hosting an ArtRageous Summer Sale from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. July 18-22 featuring summer specials on treasures old and new, starting at $5.

Browse through paintings, vintage prints, historic photos, rare books and memorabilia of old Hawaii. Treasure hunters will find works by legendary artists Jean Charlot, Hon Chew Hee, Herb Kane and Shirley Russell among many others.

The Isaacs Art Center is located at 65-1268 Kawaihae Road in Waimea, adjacent to the HPA Village Campus. Admission is free.

Sunset Saturdays celebrated in Kona

Residents, visitors and families of all ages are invited to attend Hawaiian Sunset Saturdays last Saturday of every month in Kailua Village.

The next free community event starting at 5:30 p.m. July 29 celebrates Kona’s spectacular sunsets with live Hawaiian music and hula on the lawn at Coconut Grove Marketplace.

Lawn chairs or beach mats are encouraged. Parking is available; coolers are not permitted.
